Welcome to Hundred Proof!  The best and newest addition to Hillcrest’s Park Boulevard.  After walking up to the dog friendly patio and entering the main restaurant, we are greeted by friendly faces and 80’s music. The open windows and natural light pouring in makes it feel even more welcoming.  With a reclaimed wood bar back and refurbished wood tables with metal high boys & tufted leather couches, Hundred Proof gives off a rustic-industriel feel with a hint of Prohibition flair.  It is casual, yet classy.  There are top hats lined on the walls, jackalope wallpaper, and an array of vintage mirrors lined along the walls.

 

 

 

 

Creativity is encouraged here and it shows in their extensive drink list.  From beer to cocktails and alcoholic slushies, they promote local breweries and distilleries such as Modern Times, You & Yours, and Cutwater Spirits.

 

Fosco Punch (Modern Times Fosco, Cynar, Plantation Rum, Lime, Cinnamon) – Make sure you stir this one up as our waitress suggested as there are many layers to this fruity concoction.  It is made with Modern Times sour beer & reminds me of something I should be drinking on my patio or at the beach.

 

 

Breakfast Bramble (Few Breakfast Gin, Berries, Cava) – If you are a Gin fan, this one if for you and will definitely wake you up!  It reminds me of the Weasleys because it is so Ginny~

 

 

Rosé Slushie (Rosé, You & Yours Sunday Gin, Lemon) –  A little sour, tart, and very refreshing! Rose & Gin combined as well makes for a great slushy.  You won’t need many either as it comes with a big punch.

 

 

The Berth (Rum Based, Pineapple Rum, Banana) – This one wasn’t on the menu, but was recommended by our waitress.  Tropical, delicious, and my favorite one that I tried!

 

 

Hundred Proof offers a very diverse menu ranging from classic egg dishes to Hawaiian Loco Moco’s, savory dishes such as the Brisket Hash & Chilaquiles, and sweeter options like Mama’s Baked French Toast & Lemon Ricotta Pancakes.

I recently had viewed their Instagram account and noticed the Mama’s Baked French Toast & was sold- I had to have it!  However, by the time we got there at 10:00am, it was already sold out! Keep this in mind as it is a best selling item.  After speaking with our waitress, we finally decided on some other house favorites:

 

Chilaquiles Verde (2 Eggs, Cilantro Cream, Black Beans, Cotija, Guacamole, Latin Gremolata) –

 

 

The moment these Chilaquiles were brought out, I was extremely impressed.  Just looking at that mound of  chips, black beans, guacamole, and scrambled eggs made me wide-eyed and happy to be there.  The portion size of this entree was tremendous!  I had no idea where to start, but couldn’t wait to dive in to these Chilaquiles/Breakfast Nachos!  They were so savory with every bite being fresh & delectable.

My favorite part of this one was…

…THE CHIPS!!!

I have never been the biggest fan of Chilaquiles because usually the tortillas or chips they are served with become soggy quicker that I can eat it.  THIS IS NOT THE CASE!  These house made chips were crunchy and crisp the entire meal!  Even when we left them to eat the pancakes below, we went back to the Chilaquiles a little later, and they were STILL crunchy!  Hundred Proof has found the perfect recipe mixed with some magic to create this dish.

 

Lemon Ricotta Pancakes (Whipped Butter, Blueberry, Toasted Almonds, Chantilly)

 

 

Is your mouth watering yet?  Mine is again.  Looking at these pancakes, they are almost too beautiful to eat…almost.  Another large entree & a beautiful presentation, these Lemon Ricotta Pancakes are a sweet delicacy.  They are fluffy and full of so much flavor.  The sweet blueberry, toasted almonds, and the Chantilly make these pancakes absolutely perfect in every way.  They are more like a dessert than traditional pancakes, but I say – treat yourself.  I am sure you have earned this!

 

 

Grilled Shrimp Toast (Avocado, Braised Bacon, Green Goddess, Herbs, Fruit)

 

 

After two amazing dishes, I didn’t think the Grilled Shrimp Toast would blow my mind, but was I SO wrong!  Reading it on the menu and seeing the photo above, you might just think, “Oh, an Avocado Toast.”  However, this is not your typical “Avocado Toast” and I actually wouldn’t even put it in the same type of category.

The star of the show here was the grilled shrimp!  Under the blanket of cilantro and mint, you will find five, large, juicy, grilled shrimp; thick bacon, and a light spread of avocado.  It has the freshest ingredients and is very well balanced (even for those that don’t like cilantro).

The runner up is definitely the enhanced fruit bowl.  I am confident when I say that no other restaurants provide a fruit bowl quite like Hundred Proof.  A large bowl of ripe, fresh, & some exotic fruits, you will want to eat it all!  This one contained peaches, nectarines, mangos, pineapple, strawberries, blueberries, and watermelon.

 

 

The portions here are bigger than expected and won’t break your brunch budget either.  Everything on the menu is reasonable priced from $10-$15 (not including Steak N Eggs @ $24 for a Ribeye) and brunch cocktails range from $8-$11 each.

The Hundred Proof team that I had a chance to speak with clearly loves what they do and loves the food they serve.  When your waitress/waiter gets a glow on their face when describing the food, you know it is going to be good and that kind of energy makes me want to keep coming back.  I also had the chance to meet Steve, Owner & Operator of Hundred Proof & he was so friendly and kind.  My favorite part that I noticed about Steve was that he was really “present” and always greeting and chatting with his patrons.

I honestly don’t know how Hundred Proof isn’t crawling with people on a Saturday/Sunday morning.  I truly felt that I found the most amazing hidden gem and don’t know where I have been the last year!  Definitely do yourself a favor and get to Hundred Proof as soon as you can.  It is the next big brunch spot that will eventually have a line out the door.  Trust me, you won’t regret it!  –

 

 

The “Baby” Pink Drink (Bulldog Gin, Campari, Grapefruit, Lemon) – A smaller portion of the “Pink Drink” still packs that citrus and Gin kick.  Very tasty!
